When Did Beauty Become About Fixing Women?

There was a time when beauty felt like expression.

A red lipstick because you felt powerful.
A smoky eye because you wanted drama.
Bare skin because you simply didn’t feel like wearing makeup that day.

Somewhere along the way, however, beauty started sounding less like a choice and more like a list of things we were supposed to correct.

Fine lines.
Texture.
Pores.
Dark circles.
Sagging.
Uneven skin.
Thin lips.
Too much volume. Not enough volume.

And suddenly, women were no longer just being offered products and treatments.

We were being given an endless catalogue of reasons to believe something about us needed fixing.

I work in the beauty industry, and I love makeup. I love skincare. I love the transformation that can happen when someone sits in my chair and sees herself differently.

But there is an important difference between enhancing someone and making her believe she is not enough without enhancement.

Makeup should not erase you.

It should not turn every woman into the same face, the same brows, the same lips, the same skin, the same definition of perfection.

Beauty becomes interesting when personality is still visible.

A wrinkle can tell a story.
A strong feature can become the focus instead of something to hide.
Mature skin does not need to look twenty years old to be beautiful.

And getting older should not automatically mean entering a permanent battle against your own face.

At 30, 40, 50, 60 and beyond, women deserve something better than being constantly reminded of what time has supposedly done “wrong.”

There is nothing wrong with Botox, fillers, facials, treatments, skincare or makeup when they are genuinely your choice.

The question is why we are choosing them.

Because they make us feel good?

Or because somewhere along the way we were convinced that ageing naturally was something embarrassing?

That is where the conversation becomes bigger than beauty.

For me, makeup has always been about expression.

Sometimes glamorous.
Sometimes sensual.
Sometimes barely there.
Sometimes rebellious.

But always personal.

Beauty should give women more freedom, not more insecurities.

Maybe the future of beauty should not be about looking younger.

Maybe it should simply be about looking in the mirror and still seeing yourself.

And liking the woman looking back.

No rules. No expiration date. No fixing required.
